Guardo in giro per la rete, vedo migliaia di foto di ciottoli – sembra sia una mania fotografarli – che mi lasciano sempre piuttosto deluso e ogni tanto mi chiedo: possibile che la mia sia la più bella collezione di ciottoli del mondo e che la Toscana sia la Mecca di Giottolandia? Solo per la gioia e la curiosità di vedere ciottoli ancor più belli, mi piacerebbe essere smentito...
Pebbles
Surfing the web, I come across thousands of pictures of pebbles – I wonder if it’s a sort of new mania, stones shooting – and I must admit that I generally find them of pretty poor quality. So I end up asking myself if it could be, by any chance, that mine is the best pebbles collection in the world, and Tuscany the real Mecca of Giottoland. If not for the joy and eagerness of looking at even better pebbles, I wouldn’t mind to be proved wrong...
Kieselsteine
Wenn ich durch das Netz surfe, finde ich Tausende Fotos von Kieselsteinen – es scheint eine Manie, sie zu fotografieren –, die mich aber immer etwas enttäuschen. Ab und zu frage ich mich: Ist es möglich, dass meine Sammlung von Kieselsteinen die schönste der Welt ist und dass die Toskana das Mekka von „Giottoland“ ist? Schon aus Neugier und wegen der Freude, noch schönere Kieselsteine sehen zu können, möchte ich widerlegt werden …

sono senz'altro gli animali
con cui hanno i più frequenti contatti.
Così mi ha divertito l'idea che alcuni
sassi si fossero messi a imitare
questi loro assidui frequentatori.
A volte semplicemente con disegni
nascosti nella loro superficie,
a volte anche con tutta la loro forma,
e questi sono i casi più divertenti,
perché spesso da facce opposte
dello stesso ciottolo possono nascere
degli "incontri subacquei"
tra pesci della stessa famiglia.
Pebbles live in water, and fishes Are undoubtedly the creatures
With whom they get in touch most frequently.
Thinking about that, I was delighted with the idea that Some pebbles
mirrored Their frequent visitors.
In the patterns concealed on their surfaces, sometimes.
Or even in the shapes. Theese are the funniest cases,
because from the two opposite sides
of the same pebble might result some “underwater encounters”
between fishes of the same family.

Thu 04 Sep 2008 11:10:56 PM CESTIn questa galleria ho raggruppato alcuni dei sassi più piccoli che ho raccolto nel corso degli anni. Sono ciottoli la cui dimensione massima non supera i 4 cm (ma in molti è meno di 3), eppure tra loro si trovano diverse perle di assoluta bellezza e sono forse anche quelli cui sono più affezionato, perché, unendo all'intrinseca povertà del ciottolo l'altra umile qualità francescana della piccolezza, sono in qualche modo l'espressione più perfetta dell'estetica di Giottolandia.
Small is beauty
I have reserved this part of my gallery to the smallest among the pebbles I have picked up through the years. They are at most 4 cm big (many of them being less than 3 cm) and yet there are some that are real pearls of beauty. Perhaps they are the ones I am particularly fond of, because, sharing the two typical franciscan qualities of being as poor as a stone can be, and small like a humble creature generally is, they are somehow the most perfect expression of the aesthetic of Giottoland.
Klein ist schön
In dieser Galerie habe ich einige der kleinsten Steine versammelt, die ich im Lauf der letzten Jahre gefunden habe. Sie sind höchstens 4 cm lang, bei vielen sind es weniger als 3 cm. Trotzdem gibt es darunter diverse Perlen absoluter Schönheit und es sind vielleicht diese, die ich am meisten mag, weil sie – indem sie die dem Kieselstein innewohnende Armut mit der bescheidenen franziskanischen Eigenschaft der Kleinheit verbinden – irgendwie der vollständigste Ausdruck der Ästhetik von „Giottoland“ sind.
cercando la spiaggia edenica

mi favoleggia di questa o quella spiaggia
greca tutta di ciottoli coloratissimi,
quel che so di certo è che spiagge
edeniche – quali sarebbero per me
spiagge fatte tutte di giottoli –
non ne ho mai trovate: anche in quelle
più ricche è al massimo un ciottolo
su mille a poter vantare tale titolo.
Al sogno della spiaggia edenica non ho
però rinunciato, anche se per ora
mi limito ad allestirne degli scampoli
nella bacinella di casa.
In search of the edenic beach
Occasionally, a friend or a new acquaintance Comes up with the story
of some faboulous Greek Beach, all made of the most colorful pebbles,
But in my experience I never came across any edenic beach
– that is to say, as far as I am concerned, entirely made of Giottoli.
I never found one. Even in the richest beach, you can find may be one pebble
over one thousand, deserving the title of Giottolo.
Be that as it may, I shall go on dreaming of the edenic beach.
For the meantime, I am quite happy to put on some small samples
in my washbasin at home.

I tagli fotografici – se ne vede qui qualche decina delle molte centinaia del mio archivio – sono forse l'esempio più stupefacente di quale immenso giacimento iconico rappresenti Giottolandia. Credo poi che molti si sorprenderanno a scoprire in queste immagini – al di là della loro bellezza – insospettate "anticipazioni" di molte suggestioni della pittura moderna, tanto che questa sezione potrebbe anche chiamarsi Avanguardie Paleolitiche.
Cuts
The photographic cuts – here are shown few tens, out of the hundreds I keep in my archive- are may be the most amazing example of the huge iconic deposit that Giottoland is. I think many of you will be surprised to discover in these pictures –besides their beauty- incredible anticipations of the suggestions of modern art, in fact this section could be titled Paleolitic avant-garde.
Ausschnitte
Hier kann man einige Dutzend fotografische Ausschnitte aus den vielen Hunderten meines Archivs ansehen. Sie sind vielleicht der erstaunlichste Aspekt der unermesslichen ikonischen Fundgrube, die „Giottoland“ darstellt. Ich glaube zudem, dass sich viele Leute wundern werden, in diesen Bildern – neben ihrer Schönheit – unerwartete „Vorwegnahmen“ vieler Einflüsse der modernen Malerei zu entdecken. Dieser Bereich könnte auch „paläolithische Avantgarden“ heißen.

Di quel che qui si vede io non ho creato nulla: nel momento in cui "scopro" e raccolgo un giottolo la sua peculiare bellezza c'è già tutta. Ma perché si riveli nella sua pienezza è assolutamente decisiva – come si può vedere in questa galleria – l'opera umile e paziente della levigazione. Un lavoro molto semplice, che si fa tutto a mano e che può fare tranquillamente anche un bambino.

In the images shown here, nothing was added or altered by my hand: in the very moment I “discovered” and picked up any of these giottoli, they contained already all their peculiar beauty. But in order to have it revealed in all its fullness, it becomes crucial –as you can see in this gallery- the humble and painstaking work of polishing. A very simple work indeed, fully executed by hand, that even a child could accomplish.

Von dem, was man hier sieht, habe ich nichts erschaffen: In dem Moment, in dem ich einen Kieselstein „entdecke“ und aufsammle, ist seine spezielle Schönheit schon ganz vorhanden. Aber damit sie sich in ihrer Vollkommenheit zeigen kann, ist – wie man in dieser Galerie sehen kann –die bescheidene und geduldige Tätigkeit des Schleifens absolut entscheidend. Es ist eine ganz einfache Arbeit, die man nur mit der Hand ausführt und die auch ein Kind problemlos erledigen kann.
